'Tis the season to be warm and tights are a key component of that endeavor. Available in many colors, textures and designs, they can provide warmth, support and style all at once. Usually, we play with the colors and patterns but this year, we are going bold with logos and animal prints on tights. Look out for logo tights from Fendi and Gucci while Calzedonia and Wolford have a great collection of animal print tights.
Fleece tights are great for keeping warm and can be worn under almost any outfit. Those in the know have already started clearing the shelves of these as a friend and I discovered when we went looking for them twice last week! Sheer tights look great with pumps and opaque tights are great with boots when worn with a sweater dress for example. For extra cozyness and comfort, Cashmere tights are the way to go. These tend to be thinner than fleece tights while giving you just as much warmth. Choosing the right tights to wear can be confusing but Wiki How has some great tips to assist you.
Many moons ago, my cousin and I went hosiery shopping in London and she made me buy a pair of ribbed Wolford tights. It cost more money than I cared to spend but I have had those tights now for over 5 years. Increasingly, the easily disposable nature of tights are becoming an issue for the environment as they are generally not bio degradable. Many companies are working to change this and Swedish Stockings are leading the way with their stockings recycled from nylon. At $25 - $48 each, will sustainable tights ever catch on?
In the meantime, below are a few suggestions to help you keep your tights going for longer than usual:
- Pay a little more for ladder proof tights
- Knot or roll them and store in a cloth bag to prevent them from getting snagged
- Hang them on an adapted scarf hanger if tight on space
- Gently hand wash your sheer tights
The less tights we throw away, the better for the environment!
